July 17 – DAY 10 – 2011 Calgary Stampede Rangeland Derby Championship

 
The 2011 Calgary Stampede Rangeland Derby Championship is in the books, and history has been made once again as Kelly Sutherland, driving the YaYaCalgary.com Chuckwagon outfit, and along with outriders Reo King and Chanse Vigen emerged from the sudden death championship final heat as the champions and $100,000.00 richer. It is a history making 12th Calgary Stampede Rangeland Derby Championship for Sutherland, who set the record for the most Calgary Stampede championships last year in 2010.

Coming off barrel number 1 in heat number 9, Sutherland won the penalty free sudden death final by 47 one-hundreds of a second over aggregate winner Reg Johnstone who placed 2nd from barrel number 2, followed by first time qualifier Kurt Bensmiller who placed 3rd from barrel number 3 and Jerry Bremner who was 4th from barrel position number 4.

As far as day results are concerned, Wayne Knight posted the top time of the night with a very rapid 1:16.03, with rookie driver Layne Bremner placing second, followed by Kelly Sutherland, Brian Laboucane and Mark Sutherland filling out the top five for the night.
Reg Johnstone received the Calgary Stampede’s Safe Drive Award for the first time in his career for being the least penalized driver over the first 9 nights of the Rangeland Derby. Layne Bremner received the Orville Strandquist Award for Top Rookie Driver. Bremner won the award for placing 25th overall with earnings of $22,950.00 bettering Jamie Laboucane who placed 29th overall with earnings of $20,650.00, followed by Cliff Cunningham who placed 31st overall with earnings of $20,450.00, Jordie Fike in 34th place with earnings of $19,800.00 and Lincoln Douglas in 35th overall with earnings of $19,450.00.

Kelly Sutherland ended up in first place overall with total earnings of $140,850.00 followed by Reg Johnstone who finished 2nd with earnings of $53,400.00 plus a 2011 GMC Truck that he won for being the 2011 aggregate champion, followed by Kurt Bensmiller in 3rd place overall with earnings of $44,700.00, Rick Fraser was 4th with total earnings of $44,50.00, with Jerry Bremner rounding out the top five with total earnings of $39,400.00. WPCA drivers placed 16 wagons inside the top 20 overall.

The WPCA Dodge Pro Tour now resumes at the Capital Ex Chuckwagon Derby in Edmonton running from Saturday, July 23, 2011 through to Tuesday, July 26, 2011 and can be heard live on Classic Country AM1060 out of Calgary, 890AM CJDC out of Dawson Creek and 99.7 FM The Wolf out of Bonnyville.
