Dispute over merger leaves beef industry in disarray
Just as Canada’s beef producers finally see signs of a recovery, they have become embroiled in a battle over a plan to merge two beef marketing agencies.
The dispute, which pits cattle ranchers against a group of exporters, has disrupted Canada’s efforts to sell almost $2-billion worth of beef in Mexico, China and other booming Asian markets. It also comes as cattle prices have started climbing for the first time in years and several trade issues have been settled, creating new opportunities for Canadian beef.
