July 12 – Day 5 – 2011 Calgary Stampede Rangeland Derby Championship

After the chuckwagons drivers endured Day muddy racetrack conditions on day 4 of the Calgary Stampede Rangeland Derby, day 5 saw the racetrack more back to normal, and the races run under partly cloudy skies and 20°C. Rae Croteau Jr., driving the Ranchman’s/Tomco/Nabors outfit, won the day money with a run of 1:16.98, and was the only driver on the night to break the 1:17.00 barrier.

Coming off barrel number 2 in heat number 3, Croteau was fastest on the night by 57 one-hundreds of a second over two-time Calgary Aggregate winner Jason Glass. Mark Sutherland grabbed third place on the night, with Grant Profit and Gary Gorst making out the top five on the night.

With three runs remaining for the drivers to qualify in the top eight for “Semi Final Saturday,” Rick Fraser continues to lead the overall aggregate standings with a 5 day combined time of 6:30.17. That puts him 1.59 seconds ahead of Obrey Motowylo who sits alone in second, with Mark Sutherland moving up into third and Reg Johnstone slipping a little into fourth place overall. Jerry Bremner, Gary Gorst, Colt Cosgrave, and Hugh Sinclair make up the top eight right now, with defending champion Kelly Sutherland in ninth place just 38 one-hundreds of a second out of a birth in the semi final round.

The aggregate winner will be declared after 8 nights on Friday, July 15, and the top 8 in the aggregate on that day will go into “Semi Final Saturday.” The top 4 times from heats 8 and 9 on semi final Saturday on July 16 will go into the sudden death championship final heat. The winner of the final heat will be declared the 2011 Calgary Stampede Rangeland Derby Champion.

Day 5 from the Calgary Stampede Rangeland Derby can be heard live on Saturday, July 12 at 6:15pm on Classic Country AM1060 out of Calgary, 890AM CJDC out of Dawson Creek, 99.7 FM The Wolf out of Bonnyville. 96.6 CKFM out of Olds.
