Songs From The Saddle Shop

Genuine Cowgirls

Lynda Thurston is no stranger to Canadian Cowboy Country readers and viewers. Mother of the trick riding Thurston Gang, rodeo producer, commentator and hard working ranch wife, she has now added singer and songwriter to her packed resume. She teamed up with Lori Gordon and Robyn Armstrong to form the group Genuine Cowgirls. Lori, who ranches with her husband Craig near Big Valley, plays mandolin, sings and builds saddles. Robyn is married to stock contractor and bull rider Kelly Armstrong and they raise bucking bulls on their ranch east of Big Valley, so Genuine Cowgirls, they sure are.

Lynda wrote all 13 songs on this collection and the gals travelled to Franklin, Tennessee to record the project, guided by Bradley Hartman and Tim Lorsch. Tempered by the harsher side of ranch life, Lynda’s writing is at times soulful, and the emotions behind the stoic exterior of a woman who supports the family, the stock and the ranch. Several of the songs delve into the ebb and flow of relationships on the range and they have more depth than just blue skies and wild flower bouquets.

The Collection Solo Acoustic

Gary Fjellgaard

Gary Fjellgaard says, “The indomitable spirit of the cowboy and the western lifestyle has been the inspiration for this collection.” Gary took his guitar to St. Andrews Church in Nanaimo, B.C. and recorded 14 of his finely crafted songs along with the traditional Streets of Laredo. Live with no over dubs, the acoustics of the church interior are a perfect audio environment.

Gary’s acoustic finger-picking guitar style has been admired by professional guitar virtuosos and amateurs alike and it’s really nice to get a full measure to savour. Two of the most significant cowboy songs of the last 20 years are included. The Falcon and the Cowboy is an eloquent testimony to the relationship real ranch people have with our environment and fellow inhabitants, and Reins of Glory, which has been recorded by many big name Western performers who recognize the significance of this masterpiece. It ranks up there with some of Bob Nolan’s finest creations.

Truly great music has the capability of reaching beyond the eardrums and touching the heart. Put this CD in your player and listen closely to Caragana Wind. You might need a Kleenex close by.
